2018 Election process starts in San Luis Potosi
The State Elections and Citizens Participation Council was legally installed and it marked the beginning of the 2018 electoral process, in which 58 municipalities and 27 state Deputies will be elected.
In the public proceedings, Councilor President Laura Elena Fonseca Leal, said the Council will face this election with a renewed electoral law, with complete gender equality and 20% in under 29 year olds for city councilor candidates.
Also, it will be the first time that these local authorities can be reelected.
This election will also be concurrent with the federal election, so besides local authorities, potosinos will also be able to vote for federal president, senators and federal deputies.
State Congress receives the request to eliminate immunity for Deputy Enrique Flores
The State Prosecutors Office has turned in to local Congress the request for the legislature too strip legislative privilege (fuero), from deputy Enrique Flores.
Flores is under investigation for allegedly asking for kickbacks from mayors, to clear up their public accounts and is currently under permission from Congress.
For the Prosecutors Office to be able to send the investigation to a judge, legislative privilege has to be taken away by congressional vote.
Mayor Gallardo has not said yet if he will look for reelection
Marco Antonio Aranda, city General Secretary, pointed out that the mayor, Ricardo Gallardo, has not said yet if he will seek reelection in 2018.
He also informed that, given the restrictions by the State Elections Council, the city government will stop using the word “Gallardía” “We will be careful with the use of words and avoid personal publicity for city officials, although we’ll still inform on institutional efforts”; the use of the word which means valiant and chivalrous, is a play on words with the mayors’ last name.
Recently, the Federation’s Judiciary Electoral Court (TEPJF) has turned down the National Elections Institute (INE) intention of limiting public officials with intentions of being candidates, in their government or legislative reports.
