BMW COULD BUILD ELECTRIC CARS IN SAN LUIS POTOSI PLANT; SAN LUIS CITY OFFICIALS WILL DONATE ONE DAY OF WAGES EACH, TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS; POTOSINOS PREFER EUROPE AND SOUTH AMERICA, OVER THE USA.
BMW could build electric cars in San Luis Potosi plant
Although plans for production of Series 3 model are foremost, Alexander Wher, President and CEO of BMW Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean, did not discard the possibility of in the future, building electric cars.
The plant has a 60% progress of its building and will start production in 2019, and while electric cars are not being planned in the line of production, Wher said that BMW is committed on making a “More universal engineering to give consumers the car they need, gas, electric or diesel”.
He added that with current world car market conditions, BMW will produce vehicles in the San Luis Potosi plant, which will have sufficient flexibility to adapt to market needs.
He also mentioned that the first fifteen Mexicans that will be trained in the company’s facilities in Spartanburg, North Carolina, have already started their internships.
San Luis city officials will donate one day of wages each, to earthquake victims
After the 8.4 earthquake that hit southern Mexico, San Luis Potosí Mayor, Ricardo Gallardo, announced that he will donate a full day’s wages; also, his cabinet and senior officials will follow suit and contribute towards the relief effort of the affected areas.
Gallardo called to Potosinos to show solidarity, and informed that the city has set up several donation points, where supplies such as bottled water, rice, beans, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, chlorine pills will be received. These supplies will be sent to Juchitan, one of the municipalities that suffered the most.
Almost 100 dead and several million pesos in material damages, in cities and towns in the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco; were the effects of the strongest quake ever registered in the American continent, with its epicenter 54 miles southwest of the town of Pijijiapan, in Chiapas.
Potosinos are choosing Europe and South America for tourism, over the USA
Potosinos used to prefer travel destinations in the USA, like Las Vegas, New York and Orlando, which will still have visitors, but there have been more travelers to places like Netherlands, Spain, France and Italy; also, Peru and Colombia.
Laura Lara Nájera, Tourism Vicepresident of CANACO Commerce Chamber, said that Trump’s anti Mexican rhetoric and restrictive travel policies, have made Potosinos look for other options in their vacation plans.
Lara added that travel bookings have gone up 20%, mainly in packages to Europe and South America, which have preferred prices and can be payed in installments.
